Yes! Another one! I was so comfortable with Facebook and i thought, this would be my FINAL networking site, but i have been proved wrong, AGAIN!!!
Twitter is here-the next BIG THING!
I first came to know about twitter, when there was news, that Mr. Google (yes, it' masculine, all good things are masculine) showed interest to buy Twitter.
It wasn't a professional networking site like Linked in, neither it was a social networking site like orkut, Hi5, facebook, myspace, it is what people called Micro-Blogging.
The term "Micro-Blogging" is quite self-explanatory. For people who dont know, why don't you see this Micro-blogging.
So, when CTO of my company started Tweeting, i thought it was quite cool, actually what really got me going was the "firefox twitter address bar plugin", i thought writing in the address bar and posting was so Geeky. Anyways, it took me day, to reset my old password and finally start tweeting.
Now, i am twittering and i am really liking it, the concept is really cool, you tweet about whatever is happening in your life, what you are doing, what you don't like at that particular time, in short for people who understand the fb language, it is nothing but a series of FB like status called "Tweets".
Another very cool thing about twitter is, it's app's to tweet, some user use a desktop version of twitter called twitterdeck, some use it in their browser like twitterfox ( this is what i use) or twitter opera, some use it from their blackbeery- twitterberry and some boring people use it from the web. :-p
Gul Panag uses iphone to twitter, surprized?! how i know that ? Well a very interesting concept again, i can follow celebrities on twitter and know what they are doing. Quite kool! Like, Gul just downloaded OS 3 on her iphone.
Like in facebook, you have celebrity pages, there are these verified account of celebrities and u can follow what they are doing.
And then there are news channels like CNN, NDTV, NYT, tweeting all the latest news...it is just incredible how a simple concept can pick up so fast. My CTO told me that 75% of the user of twitter joined in the year 2009, that is simply INCREDIBLE !!!
But all is not good, though a lot of traffic flows to these micro-bloggin website and social networking sites, the founders have not been able to come up with a revenue generating model, as the cost of operating high traffic sites is quite huge. Advertisments are only way to make money here. Facebook did try to modify the privacy policy to try and create an alternative revenue generating stream to Ads but had to go back to it's previous policy after user protested against it.
Twitter also faces a similar dilemma, However, nothing is stopping people from coming up with newer social networking concepts, and who know's, someday, we might actually pay, to be part of some extremely interesting networking concept.
